NO WIN NO FEE services came into effect in 1998 when Legal Aid was abandoned and was replaced by the Conditional Fee Agreement (CFA). This means that solicitors are only paid if they win the case.
Before 1998 a personal injury claim could only be made by those wealthy enough to pay the solicitors' fees and those whose circumstances entitled them to government funding such as Legal Aid. Many people who were not as wealthy nor poor enough did not have the opportunity to get the justice they deserved.

Most insurance companies advise their customers to take out legal expenses cover along side their insurance (motor, home, etc.). This covers any legal fees and medical arrangement fees that may occur. If you do not have this cover then ATE insurance is needed.
